Lava flow from Staffa, Scotland -- The well-developed lower colonade of this lava flow was produced from cooling against the underlying tan-colored sediments. The columnar joints developed perpendicular to the cooling surface. The hackly jointing above the lower colonade is typical of a well-developed entablature. Photo copyright by Michael Macgregor. |
