How Volcanoes Work

 Image Described in Caption
Lahar generated from erupting lava at the summit of the Villarica volcano, Chile -- In October 1984, the lava flow shown here began to spill down the slope of Villarica. Melting into the snow and ice produced a 30-m-deep channel. Five weeks later, the lava production increased and the meltwater triggered a small lahar that destroyed a bridge at the base of the volcano. Courtesy of USGS.
