How Volcanoes Work

Image Described in Caption
The annular red plume deposit of SO2 frost is evident in these paired images of the Pele hotspot. The image on the left was taken by Galileo Orbiter on April 4, 1999 and that on the left on September 19,1999. In less than six months an eruption occurred on Pillan Patera to create the dark region visible to the right of Pele in the September 19 image. The dark spot is probably composed of silicate air fall. Courtesy of NASA.
