How Volcanoes Work

 Image Described in Caption
Sakurajima Volcano -- This stratovolcano forms a peninsula in Kagoshima Bay in the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. The volcano has been in near continuous eruption since 1955. It is one of 15 volcanoes identified for detailed study as part of the International "Decade Volcano" program. Sporadic vulcanian eruptions with moderate eruption columns are common at Sakurajima, as evidenced by the eruption shown here on August 10, 1995. Courtesy of JPL/NASA.
