How Volcanoes Work

 Image Described in Caption
Kupaianaha Lava Lake -- Lava filled the Kupaianaha vent on the east rift system of Kilauea in 1986 to produce this magnificent lava lake. The lake is elongated downslope through a lava channel. The plume of volcanic gas in the background marks the site of a lava tube. The Kupaianaha vent ceased to erupt in 1992. Courtesy of E.W. Wolfe, USGS.
