| False-colored LandSat Image of Harrat Khaybar, western Saudi Arabia -- The lava flows and flow fields present in the image cover a wide variety of ages, from ~5 million year old (left: orangish flow field) to post-Neolithic in age (top: reddish-orange lava flows), to historic (black lava flows). Most of these lavas erupted from a north-northwest trending linear vent system (right-hand side of image), marked by a series of scoria cones, shield volcanoes, and lava domes. The lavas cover a wide spectrum of compositions from basalt to highly alkalic felsic rocks, called comendites, located in the center of the vent system (whitish region). |
